We get a lot of people going to and from the river to fish. “A lot of customers travel from towns around the area, and the flooded roads stopped a lot of that. The flood caused a portion of the highway that serves as a main corridor to her restaurant to shut down. What was supposed to be a strong second year of operation at a new spot became what Mengenhauser said was the “most difficult year” she ever had running the business. With a bigger building that could seat up to double the amount of customers, Mengenhauser and a family member had the new restaurant location humming along until the 2019 flood hit. As it began experiencing asbestos and became too costly to afford the electric bills, she closed it in 2017 and built the restaurant in a new spot along Highway 281 the following year. “To do that, you gotta love to cook.”įor roughly five years, she operated the restaurant with her late husband, Mark Mengenhauser, in the old Melmers Drive In building, which was much smaller than the existing building. I wanted to give that to the community,” she said. “Growing up, you had a home-cooked meal everyday. It was then she learned the art of South Dakota down-home cooking and baking sweets. She developed a passion for cooking as a young kid growing up in Canova, where she learned the trade from her parents. “We had no restaurant in town, and we’re the county seat for Charles Mix County. “I’ve tried to help build this town up, but dang it, you need a restaurant to do it,” Mengenhauser said. In 2014, the community had a spot to dine once again when she opened The Inside Scoop. After Moe's Place closed and left the town without a restaurant, Mengenhauser couldn’t bear the thought of the community being without an eating establishment. Mengenhauser’s journey into the restaurant world began about a decade ago when she bought the building that used to house Moe's Place and Melmers Drive In. I’m convinced some customers come to see if he’s here to chat baseball and whatever else,” Mengenhauser laughed.Ĭommitted to providing Lake Andes with a restaurant “When my dad (Miller) is here, he’s always striking up conversations with everyone who walks through the doors. The wide variety of cuisines and desserts served at The Inside Scoop are well-known around the Missouri River town, and the 92-year-old door greeter, Harold Miller, is just as famous as the food. Opheim, who is the main man behind the popular food being dished out, has infused his culinary expertise into the daily specials and brought new items to the menu.Īs she’s done throughout much of her life in the hospitality industry, Blaha keeps the atmosphere friendly and welcoming, along with providing what Mengenhauser says is the “best customer service there is.” The dynamic trio bring their areas of restaurant expertise to The Inside Scoop. “When she took back over, all three of us were kind of like ‘OK, here we go.’” We hadn’t even met (Mengenhauser) before coming here,” Opheim laughed. We came here to help them run it, and we’ve been here since. “We lasted six months away from this world before a phone call asking us to work for A&A Eatery. Like Mengenhauser, Opheim and Blaha were on their first hiatus from the restaurant industry before diving back in about a year ago when they moved to Lake Andes to work at A&A Eatery - a stark contrast from the city life they left in Sioux Falls. When Mengenhauser reopened The Inside Scoop a month ago, she tabbed Opheim and Blaha as the managers. I definitely missed it all,” she said of The Inside Scoop. “This is a special place to me, and I never want to see Lake Andes without a good restaurant in town. So, too, were the signature food specials like the ultimate chili cheese dog, beef chislic basket and breakfast burritos. But an unexpected career change from her daughter led Mengenhauser back to the kitchen in late July.Īfter about a year-long hiatus, Mengenhauser and The Inside Scoop were back. Mengenhauser had no intentions of jumping back into the restaurant world when she turned the business over to her daughter and another owner who changed the menu and name to A&A Eatery Apothecary. The longtime owner of The Inside Scoop in Lake Andes was in the process of selling her restaurant this year to a group of new owners by way of contract for deed. LAKE ANDES - Cindy Mengenhauser has tried to let go of the restaurant she helped build into a Lake Andes staple over the years, but she can’t seem to stay away. Different factors may also be more prominent in one person than another. Of course, not all factors are necessarily present in each person, or in each situation when they are taking a risk. To see the wreckage of a 20th-century ocean liner suddenly appearing in the murky depths of the ocean could certainly induce those emotions. Or maybe there are social motives-the ability to talk about things that nobody else can talk about-or extreme risk-taking could be related to conspicuous consumption or doing something unique that confers an elite or wealthy social status.įinally, there is seeking wonder and awe. Psychologists, for instance, have measured boosts to self-esteem when some people put themselves through risky experiences. There are also issues of identity that can be associated with taking risks. “It’s something the brain might want to do,” Satpute says. Ajay Satpute, an assistant professor of psychology at Northeastern “We think it’s going to be safe, but it’s meant to introduce some uncertainty as to where the body goes next-and that is arousal building.” Do you watch a horror movie to prove to yourself that you can make it through, for instance, or see a car accident and think about what not to do when driving? “We think it’s going to be safe, but it’s meant to introduce some uncertainty as to where the body goes next-and that is arousal building,” Satpute said.Īnother possible reason is a wish to establish mastery over something that is negative-a feeling of conquering a fear or learning how to survive a negative stimulus. For example, Satpute referenced a rollercoaster ride. The first is seeking that ultimate state of arousal-the perfect balance between feeling the rush of uncertainty and the comfort of safety. He says there are several factors that could influence a person’s decision to take such a risk. However, Satpute notes that psychologists have studied connections between fear and arousal and extreme sports participation, haunted houses, and more. “It’s hard to study some of these things because these are tragedies,” Satpute says. Moreover, psychological studies have not been conducted involving fear and deep-sea submersibles. Satpute cautioned that individuals’ motivations and decision-making can be vastly different. OceanGate Expeditions, a private company that organizes and runs trips on the Titan, said in a statement that same afternoon that it believed the passengers “have sadly been lost.” On June 22, Thursday afternoon, however, the Coast Guard said that debris found earlier that morning was from the Titan and “was consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel.” The missing submersible set off an international search-and-rescue mission that captivated the world’s attention. Five people were aboard the craft, which was launched to survey the wreckage of the ocean liner Titanic. The “Titan” submerged Sunday morning, June 18, and its support vessel lost contact with it about an hour and 45 minutes later, according to the Coast Guard. “But at least when it comes to the choice of rationalizing what we do, we will use many different reasons to do that.” “Why did that one person do that one thing in this case, it’s really hard to know,” says Ajay Satpute, an assistant professor of psychology at Northeastern University who studies fear. What could have motivated the passengers on the submersible “Titan” to take such a risk? Then there was the liability waiver that reportedly mentioned the risk of death three times on its first page alone. The accommodations were cramped, and the destination was roughly 2½ miles below the surface of the cold, remote North Atlantic. The price tag for the trip was reportedly $250,000. Factors include the desire for arousal, conquering fears, self-esteem boosts, social status, and the pursuit of wonder and awe, says psychology professor Ajay Satpute. The submersible “Titan,” carrying five passengers on a $250,000 expedition to survey the Titanic’s wreckage, catastrophically imploded, sparking a conversation on why people take such risks. This sparked a discussion on what motivates people to undertake such perilous adventures, with factors ranging from seeking arousal and overcoming fear, to enhancing self-esteem and the pursuit of wonder and awe. The submersible “Titan,” meant to survey the Titanic’s wreckage, ended in tragedy when it imploded, taking five passengers with it. Credits are entered on the right side of the accounts and are used to raise values there. In order to increase values on the left side of the equation, debits are recorded on the left side of each individual account. Put a place in front of the text rather than a fictitious /- symbol. Additionally, you shouldn’t associate debits with drops and credits with rises. Try to think of credits and debits as value-neutral accounting words rather than as good and negative. Similar to that, I have no idea how the coding for Excel accounting works. You only need to be aware that it does you don’t really need to grasp how it does it. Still, perplexed? In all honesty, I barely sort of understand it. Your account would be debited.īecause financial institutions view business accounting through their own unique set of lenses, and their methods for calculating debits and credits may differ from yours. Yet why? Shouldn’t you receive a sizable cash payment credit in your cash account? No. Credits raise liabilities, equity, and revenue, while debits reduce those same items.Debits result in a gain in assets, whereas credits result in a decrease in expenses. The first accrual accounting guideline using Excel for Accounting and Bookkeeping to keep in mind is this: Here’s something else that defies logic even more. At the end of the month, you don’t have any extra electricity that you keep as a future asset. So why are expenses not treated like assets? Because they are used up within an accounting period during regular business operations. In exchange, you receive electricity, which balances the equation by moving to the left. Your obligation to pay your electric bill is a liability that is on the equation’s positive side. These are the items you purchase with money. What makes expenses a part of assets? Keep in mind that this is not money that is still owed to others or accounts payable. Liabilities, equity, and revenue belong on the right side of a balance sheet (or balance equation), whereas assets and expenses are on the left. I’ll come back to this last section of Excel, which is the most perplexing for small firms because it deals with how to raise your accounts.įive different types of accounts exist and one should know this to use Excel for Accounting and Bookkeeping: Make a list of every account you have, indicating the type of account each is and how you increased it. Your Excel accounting worksheet should have a chart of accounts on the first page. You must also maintain worksheets for each of the accounts listed on your balance sheet. You require more than one ledger when using accrual accounting. You must adjust the other side of the equation whenever you change one side of it. You may maintain this equation balanced by using double-entry accounting. Double-entry bookkeeping is useful in this situation. Liabilities shareholder (or owner) equity = assets. The equation: is the basis of accrual accounting. With accrual accounting, you must record all of your assets and liabilities in addition to your cash flow. At a minimum, your spreadsheet needs the following columns:ĭouble-entry Accounting and Accrual AccountingĪlthough accrual accounting is more complex than cash basis accounting, many firms prefer it because it provides a more complete and accurate picture of their business’s financial position. However, your basic accounting simply keeps track of money when it is transferred. Additional accounts payable (money you owe) and accounts receivable records can and should be kept (money owed to you). This approach is popular among small firms since it is so straightforward. The monetary basis of accounting ends there. They would frequently review these lists to make sure they were always aware of their available funds. I've had working sessions where there were incontrollable laughs, commiseration, silly ideas, relief, inside jokes and then, when you're really lucky, you get a moment to share something real. Sometimes they're frustrating and you see a new side of your colleagues, and yourself. I often find that saying things out loud clarifies my thoughts, and it can lead to impromptu moments of genius (as long as someone writes them down, cause a killer short term memory is not one of my strengths). Working on a task with someone is always better than working on it alone. It perfectly aligns with this great thing I read: Relentlessness is what you have left when you have nothing left but relentlessness. Whether it's a particularly tricky plan or a minefield of messaging with a phlethora of dependencies. The other person is there to push you, the clock is running. It's that one big task that you didn't want to do, but now there's a team behind it and you're going to do it together no matter what. Yes, grit, determination, relentlessness, tenacity. It's what gets me to read up on vertigo and understand equilibrioception, the vestibulo-ocular reflex, and then causing me even more vertigo. I think personally I am addicted to the moment of making a new connection. By working on a task together, creative friction and discussion leads to new insights, new nexus. But no matter the level of seniority, its the diversity in skillsets that really matters. I've had working sessions with Juniors, Copywriters, Sales Directors, and CEO's. Working Sessions utilize skillsets and help us learn Highly measurable, just like any 2021 marketer likes it. A working session is a task, and finishing it is the goal. We're not looking to meander around product vision or talk about what could have been with that webinar. Working Sessions have a clear end result, in a limited time frame I have used working meetings to co-create content pieces, create slide decks, create CRM engagement drips and establish training material for sales.Īnd besides ticking off a task on my to do list (and getting one of those extra delight animations in Asana), there's a number of reasons why I just LOVE working meetings, and they all represent elements I like most in my daily work: It's fundamentally different from a meeting, where stakeholders attend and the purpose is to discuss the project and then walk off with action points. Working session, work session, co-working, working meeting - in my own definition, it's a 1-hour session in a very small group (often just 2 people) with the purpose of collaborating on a single project to get it to almost-completion. I'm not saying I invented it, neither was I there, but you have picked up by now that I am an advocate of any methodology that gets things achieved in a collaborative way. Since relocating to the UK earlier this year and working remote, I have unearthed an old favorite way to get things done. like site load time optimization and the world's best sales technique when faced with errors in a product demo ("I've actually never seen this before, let me escalate that".) But I digress. But it is, in fact, one of the core jobs in Product Marketing, and I wouldn't have it any other way! Meeting different mindsets and skillsets is thought provoking and led to me learning about the craziest concepts. Cross Functional Collaboration! It seems like such a buzz word, found on any SaaS job description, and it feels almost cliche writing about that. |
